Supporting the European Network

Congratulations to Grégoire Montavon and Wojciech Samek, who have been named ELLIS Fellows. In addition, Begüm Demir and Wojciech Samek join Klaus-Robert Müller as co-directors of the ELLIS Unit Berlin.

🔹 Prof. Grégoire Montavon is Professor of Machine Learning in Medicine at Charité and leads the Charité/BIFOLD research group “Explainable Machine Learning in Medicine.” He is also part of the leadership team of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence at Charité (IKIM).
🔹 Prof. Wojciech Samek is BIFOLD Fellow and professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at TU Berlin. He also heads the Department of Artificial Intelligence at Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI).
🔹 Prof. Begüm Demir is Deputy Director of BIFOLD and Full Professor at TU Berlin, where she heads the Remote Sensing Image Analysis (RSiM) group. At BIFOLD, she heads the research group Big Data Analytics for Earth Observation.

The ELLIS Unit Berlin aims to strengthen the scientific foundations of machine learning and to turn them into AI applications that benefit society, the economy, and the sciences. Its work focuses on five areas: explainable AI, scalable machine learning and data management, machine learning for the sciences, deep learning, and learning and inference with structure and priors. The unit collaborates closely with BIFOLD, MATH+, Fraunhofer HHI, Freie Universität Berlin, Science of Intelligence, and partners across the Berlin research landscape.

BIFOLD congratulates all three on these appointments.
