The Art of Entanglement

The Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD) has established an artist-in-residence program called “Art of Entanglement”. The goal of the program is to combine artistic and scientific perspectives on artificial intelligence. The program aims to attract artists based in Berlin who are interested in working intensively with topics and scientists in the fields of Big Data Management and Machine Learning as well as their intersection. The selected artist will have the opportunity to realize an artistic project of their choice at BIFOLD, the national Berlin Center of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence at TU Berlin.

explains BIFOLD Director Prof. Dr. Klaus-Robert Müller.
The residency program provides a framework to explore the role of the artist, art and culture in the rapidly evolving wave of AI innovation in the vibrant AI metropolis of Berlin.
Prof. Dr. Volker Markl, also BIFOLD Director, adds:

“From the ‘Art of Entanglement’ program, we hope to gain new perspectives on how AI systems are used to solve problems, but also how they can undermine or highlight asymmetries and inequalities.”

The Fellowship

• 2022/2023: The program’s first fellowship was awarded to Marco Barotti in cooperation with the TU Science Gallery.
• 2024/2025: The second fellowship was awarded to the artist duo kennedy+swan in cooperation with the Schering Foundation.
• 2026/2027: BIFOLD and Schering Foundation continue their successful cooperation. 
  From a pool of ten nominated artists, the Schering Foundation and BIFOLD will first select five candidates. These artists will be invited to visit BIFOLD, become familiar with the institute, and engage with its researchers. Following this visit, they will be asked to submit a proposal for their artistic project. A jury comprising representatives of BIFOLD, the Schering Foundation, and an external curator will then select the fellow. Nominations will be treated in strict confidence, and the list of candidates will not be made public. The resulting work will be presented at BIFOLD in 2027 and at the Schering Foundation in 2028.
  
  The aim of the one-year program is to foster exchange between artists and BIFOLD researchers and to support the development of a new artistic work within the framework of the residency. Candidates should preferably be based in or actively working in Berlin.
