All Hands Meeting & AI Symposium

Summer School 2023

The second BIFOLD Weizenbaum summer school focuses on the complex relationship between Artificial Intelligence and sustainability. The program will comprise keynotes, lectures, and practical sessions and is jointly organized by the BIFOLD Graduate School and the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society - the German Internet Institute.

8 RESEARCHERS REPRESENTED BIFOLD AT SIGMOD 2023

Review SIGMOD 2023: Eight members of the BIFOLD team took the chance to showcase their recent work at SIGMOD 2023 in Seattle through a diverse array of presentations, including research papers, workshop papers, and a demo paper – all of them underscoring the institute's commitment to cutting-edge research in the field of data management.

Gazing into the Black Box AI

Experts from Fraunhofer HHI and BIFOLD showcased an AI-assisted image evaluation technique at the BMBF Open Day. The demonstration gave an example of how Artificial Intelligence arrives at its decisions and sparked a dialogue on Explainable AI between professionals and attendees. Adversarial Papers: New attack fools AI-supported text analysis

Security researchers have found significant vulnerabilities in learning algorithms used for text analysis: With the help of a novel attack, they were able to show that topic recognition algorithms can be fooled by even small changes in words, sentences and references.

Simplifying satellite data archives

ESA's Precursor Digital Assistant simplifies the usage of satellite data archives. BIFOLD research group led by Prof. Dr. Begüm Demir develops three of four search engines in the assistant. The new assistant supports the Destination Earth (DestinE) initiative of the European Union.

Do computers and humans "see" alike?

The field of computer vision has long since left the realm of research and is now used in countless daily applications, such as object recognition and measuring geometric structures of objects. One question that is not or only rarely asked is: To what extent do computer vision systems see the world in the same way that humans do?

The Shared Scientific Identity of Europe

The project Sphere: Knowledge System Evolution and the Shared Scientific Identity of Europe is one of the leading Digital Humanities projects, exploring a large corpus of more than 350 book editions about geocentric cosmology and astronomy from the early days of printing between the 15th and the 17th centuries (Sphaera Corpus) for about 76.000 pages of material.

Review Summer School 2023

The second BIFOLD Weizenbaum Summer School took place from September 11th to 15th, 2023. The school focused on the overarching theme of "AI and environmental sustainability", exploring the complex relationship between AI and sustainability, in particular AI or machine learning as tools for sustainable development.

CORALS is a kinetic sound sculpture by the Italian media artist Marco Barotti. The installation was created as part of the BIFOLD Artist in Residence Program and is now being exhibited at one of the largest art fairs in Asia.
