BIFOLD researcher at TU Berlin honoured by Tagesspiegel for advancing explainable AI in quantum chemistry to support climate action and sustainable technologies.
The Berlin-based newspaper Tagesspiegel has named Dr. Stefan Chmiela, Research Group Lead at the Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD) at TU Berlin, one of the 100 Most Influential Figures in Berlin Science 2025. The recognition honours his work in simulating molecular processes using explainable artificial intelligence (XAI).
Tagesspiegel publishes every year a ten-day special series highlighting ten outstanding scientists each day who significantly contribute to Berlin's scientific excellence and innovation landscape.
Among those featured is Dr. Chmiela, who leads the research group Machine Learning for the Simulation of Molecular Processes in Quantum Chemistry at BIFOLD. His research focuses on the use of explainable AI to gain a better understanding of chemical reactions at the atomic level. These insights are essential for the advancement of Green Chemistry and for developing solutions to combat climate change.
In total, 14 researchers from TU Berlin have been included in the list of Berlin’s 100 leading scientific minds. Among them are Dr. Milagros Miceli from the Weizenbaum Institute, recently named by TIME Magazine as one of the world’s most influential figures in artificial intelligence, and Dr. Vera Schmitt, whose work focuses on explainable AI for detecting and combating disinformation.
