Paper Highlight: Cedalion Tutorial
Researchers from BIFOLD / TU Berlin and Boston University have published a comprehensive tutorial on Cedalion, an open-source project that brings together analysis tools for multimodal neuroimaging, with a special focus on fNIRS and DOT data. The paper appeared on 13 August 2026 in the journal Neurophotonics. A hands-on community workshop follows on 24–25 August in Berlin and online.
AI Goes Phishing
BIFOLD study, co-authored by members of the Machine Learning and Security Group, shows AI-generated phishing emails are three times as effective as generic ones and cost next to nothing. The field experiment with 7,700 participants provides the first large-scale evidence of how cheaply and effectively language models can personalize phishing. The paper will be presented at the USENIX Security Symposium 2026.
BIFOLD participated in SIGIR 2026
Researchers from BIFOLD and the University of Amsterdam presented ERASE, a new real-world-aligned benchmark for machine unlearning in recommender systems, at the 49th ACM SIGIR Conference in Melbourne, Australia, in 2026.

Berlin-based x-cardiac has a new name and a bigger mission. The company, co-founded by BIFOLD Deputy Director Alexander Meyer and known for AI tools that predict complications after heart surgery, is now called Ascléa.
