AI has become a key research topic in Germany and in Berlin in particular. Here, renowned research institutions, start-ups, industry partners and civil society players are working closely together to develop AI systems and use them responsibly. With the entry into force of the European AI Act, a focus has been placed on open source.

However, this event goes one step further: a truly responsible design and use of AI requires both a deep anchoring in open science and a commitment to free knowledge. We will discuss this on March 25, 2025, at the invitation of the Berlin University Alliance in cooperation with the Weizenbaum Institute and Wikimedia Deutschland, with the support of Wissenschaft im Dialog and the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society.

The opening up of data and knowledge production plays a decisive role here. It not only creates more transparency, but also enables more comprehensive control and insights into the complex socio-technical systems of AI. This requires sustainable infrastructures for the opening up of knowledge. While the legal framework of the AI Act is aimed at transparency and security, it is clear that innovative approaches to participation and governance are necessary in order to jointly develop, test and control these new technologies in the long term.

Berlin offers ideal conditions for this discourse: As a location for innovation and an important political center of Europe, the city is a hub for interdisciplinary and intersectoral cooperation. Stakeholders from science, business, politics and society have been working here for years to develop forward-looking solutions to the challenges of digital transformation. The one-day event aims to provide new impetus for shaping AI as responsibly and sustainably as possible.

The program:

  • In the morning, the focus will be on knowledge exchange and networking within the scientific community.
  • The afternoon will focus on cooperation between science, business and civil society and will include a strategy process.
  • The evening will conclude with a high-caliber panel discussion with representatives from politics, business and science.

Registration will open in January. Save the date until then.
