The field of artificial intelligence (AI) is experiencing unprecedented momentum internationally, driven by rapid technological developments and investments worth billions. As a pioneer in AI research, Germany has been well positioned and internationally networked for many years. Not only local science, but also increasingly the German economy – from start-ups and SMEs to large corporations – is exploiting the potential of AI. At the same time, global competition raises key questions: Where is the technology and its applications heading? How can Germany and Europe cooperate and compete with the US and China on an equal footing in the long term – while at the same time acting in a value-oriented manner? How can technologically remain sovereign? And how does a society want to be supported by AI?
