Risik narratives in the field of privacy, surveillance, and data protection

The Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) and the nexus Institute for Interdisciplinary Research and Cooperation Management cordially invite you to an interdisciplinary conference in Berlin. The focus is on the question of how risks are narrated, explained and communicated in the context of modern data processing – and what effects these narratives have on individuals and society. The event will be held in German.

The processing of personal data in digital systems is ubiquitous—and often remains opaque. Complex constellations of actors – such as different companies that provide content, advertise products, or broker advertising space – sophisticated technical infrastructures, and comprehensive personalization make it difficult for users and data subjects not only to understand data processing, but also to adequately assess its impact on individual and collective fundamental rights and freedoms and social structures.

In research and practice, a variety of ways have already been explored to better communicate knowledge about data processing: from more understandable texts to graphical representations and interactive formats. Nevertheless, two central questions often remain unanswered: How can people not only better understand data processing, but also deduce its consequences and risks? And how can people be truly empowered to not only recognize risks, but also assess them – and act accordingly?
