Working Students with 40/80h per month, Database Systems and Information Management (DIMA)

The Database Systems and Information Management Research Group (DIMA) focuses on a wide range of topics and challenges with the overarching goal to address both the human and technical latencies prevalent in the data analysis process. The group is headed by Prof. Volker Markl and investigates the areas of Automatic Optimization of Data Processing on Modern Hardware, Automatic Optimization of Distributed Machine Learning (ML) Programs, Optimization of Data Science and ML Processes, Hardware-tailored Code Generation, Compliant Geo-distributed Data Analytics, Efficient Visualization of Big Data, Scalable Gathering and Processing of Distributed Streaming Data, Data Processing on Modern Hardware and Scalable State Management.

Working Field: Research, computer science, software development and programming. Support in the ongoing research activities:

1. Approx. 80% support in scientific work in third-party funded projects (DFG, BMBF, EU, and possibly following) as well as in ongoing scientific research activities of the BIFOLD Institute in the context of Big Data and Data Science systems according to the strategic research agenda of BIFOLD, for the next 7-10 years. Directly interface with scientists and directly contribute to the development and evaluation of research prototypes, performance measurement, and vulnerability analysis of Big Data and data stream analysis systems to identify research questions, assist in the identification and analysis of new linear and relational algebra algorithms for scalable processing of Data Science pipelines.
2. Approx. 20% direct work with scientists and support in the review and evaluation of relevant scientific literature as well as in the publication and presentation of the achieved research results.

Requirements

• DBL knowledge
• SQL knowledge and understanding of common programming languages (e.g., Python, Matlab, Java, C/C ++, HTML, Javascript)
• English language skills are mandatory (good written and spoken) 
• German language skills are desirable (good written and spoken)

Compensation: Hourly pay according to TV-Stud III: 13,01 euros
